Campsites
Everyone is different and campsites are no exception either, not everyone enjoys the same experiences or like the same things some may want a social loud family site while others may want the peace and quiet with no kids around and obviously there is everyone in between and people who don’t like camp sites at all well luckily there are options to suit all. Below are the three main things you will want to consider when booking a campsite.
SIZE – Campsites vary hugely in size we have stayed on campsites with only a few pitches to huge ones that take 100s of tents. We have drove up driveways thinking we may have took a wrong turn and ended up having to knock on the farm house door looking sheepish only to find out we are in the right place and the campsite was indeed there albeit small and simple. On the other side we have arrived at a campsite and had to queue to reception and then get escorted to our pitch by a golf buggy as the site was so big. You will have to decide what suits your needs as it could be a long walk in the middle of the night to use the toilets if needed if you don’t have your own toilet, and if you have young children who want to use the toilets often or visit the shop it could end up been very inconvenient to you all so take into consideration if a large site with a long walk to all facilities would suit you or if you want to have have the convenience of the facilities within throwing distance. So are you looking for a large one or a simple small campsite ? To help you decide you can check out our campsite reviews HERE
FACILITIES – The facilities will vary from site to site some may not even have any at all and will require you to have your own toilet this could be as simple a compost bucket and a toilet tent or a full flushing toilet in your caravan or campervan, others however may have a full block of toilets even more than one block with heated floors, showers, utilities room and games rooms the more commercialised sites have club houses with entertainment on a night also which is perfect for keeping the kids entertained on those rainy evenings allowing the adults to relax with a drink. Electric hook up is something you will need to consider also. If your camping trip is a week long trip do you need an electric cool box, if its in the cooler months do you require a heater, can you keep your kids occupied without films and youtube, do you have lighting needing electric or is the trip to enable you and your family to get back to basics and leave the distractions at home and get closer to nature. ? Of course all these details can be found on the sites website or through reviews to allow you to make your decision whether the site has what you and your family want after all it has to be an enjoyable experience for everyone.
LOCATION – Campsites can be found everywhere from Towns and Citys, Coastal areas to literally the middle of nowhere. The former campsites are great for a cheap city break seeing different cultures site seeing, visits to the cinema and eating out. If this is your thing you will be looking at campsites in or near Citys and Towns. Campsites in or around coastal areas are great for getting onto the beach early before the crowds, keeping the kids amused in the arcades or going walking on the coastal paths and exploring the seaside towns and generally exploring the coast. There are some great cliff top sites about and sites tucked away down in the coves creating a feeling of secrecy. Then there are the campsites in the countryside near honeypot villages and towns and in the National Parks and forests which can be enjoyed whether you are discovering the area by car or by foot, planning some hiking, biking , kayaking ,rock climbing or just want a change of scenery and some rest and relaxation and there are campsites which may not have any villages nearby or are accessed by travelling 2 or 3 miles down a dirt track with an honesty box and ones that are only accessible by 4 x 4 , cycle or foot bringing real isolation.
Within the last few years there have been many pop up temporary campsites appearing this was mainly because many people were staying in the UK to holiday and demand was high. How about Wild Camping ? This is a bit of a grey area and it is illegal to wild camp in England with the exception of Dartmoor however there are now many sites opening around England offering the user a wild camping off grid experience this will give you the feeling of wild camping while been in a safe controlled environment perfect if you are not yet ready to go and undertake a wild camp just yet or want to test out new gear or try been wild with the kids for a night with no technology or comforts that’s if you dare. !!
