Newborough forest, Anglesey. Forests, Beaches, Islands and Mountain Views

Newborough Forest, Anglesey

If you can’t decide whether you like been in the mountains more than the forests or been by the sea, well Newborough Forest can tick all of them boxes at once.

Recommended by my cousin we decided to visit during our stay on Anglesey, and the day we choose happened to be one of the best days of weather we had that week, clear blue skies and bright sunshine.
After breakfast on the campsite we packed the van and set off down the coastline. Arriving at the town of Newborough we followed the signs to the forest. The entrance road into the forest was an amazing a single-track road winding down through the forest the view ahead of showing off the beach, sea and further on the horizon the snowdonia range of mountains, it really was like something from a film.

This road led us to into a large car park right next to the beach. We found a spot in the shade parked up and applied our sunscreen, packed some sandwiches in the bag and took a walk down to the information board. There are waymarked walks of various lengths for all abilities. We choose the route that would take us through the forest and then up to the light house situated on Ynys Llanddwyn then onto the beach and then back through the woods.

The first half of this walk shares the same paths as the shorter nature trail which has wonderful posts with clues to an animal which you take a guess as to what it will be, the correct answer and further information on the back, it’s the first time we have seen anything like these but they are great and hopefully will be used in other forests there great fun for kids and adults alike 🙂

The trail meandered through the forest and past other information boards informing of the geology here and how these awesome rock formations ended up here which the trail takes you past.

Eventually the path leads you to a gap in the sand dunes with the view of a lovely beach and the sea, walking through this again was like a movie, very impressive.
The beach here was a vast expanse and only had a few people scattered about, we took the opportunity to let Mika have a good run along and splash in the sea, this is where she turns back in to a puppy and leaps and jumps around in and out of the water.

After Mika had tired herself out we walked up onto Ynys Llanddwyn, here we followed the route to the lighthouse this takes you past many historical buildings with information boards explaining what they were used for.

Along the way little hidden beaches kept exposing themselves, these looked like they belonged on a desert island, we decided that we would explore one of these on our way back and have our dinner on one.

We carried on up to the lighthouse and climbed the short set of steps up to the top and from the base of the lighthouse admired the view of the small perfect islands dotted around and mountain ranges in the far distance across the sea.

After spending ten minutes or so here we strolled back the way we came and looked out for an empty secret beach, which didn’t take us long to find one. We made our way down the grassy bank onto the shore, It really could have been a desert island.

While tucking in to our sandwiches we noticed something in the sea not too far out from shore steadily floating about. Upon a closer look we realised this was a seal just casually watching us eat our dinner, as quick as it appeared it disappeared again.
We had just finished eating when Coben excitedly started shouting out and pointing into the sea, yep our friend was back watching us again this felt quite magical.

The seal disappeared again so we went down for a paddle which Coben loved. After getting more wet than anticipated we got dried off packed up and headed back on to the trail which took us along the beach for a while before going back into the forest. This part of the beach is dog free so you have to go into the forest to avoid it, however this is only a small area and there is plenty of beach to take your dogs on.
On the way back we started to pass more people and some of these had ice creams so we had a mission to track down the ice cream van, which we did and sat at the van eating ice cream and casually sitting about while Coben explored the area finding sticks to make a scarecrow for some reason.

We spent a full day here and could have easily have spent another day too, so it’s a place to revisit when we are back on Anglesey.
One we definitely recommend to anyone  visiting Anglesey.

So Mountains, Sea, Forests or Beaches …………. Well you don’t have to have favorites do you ??
